Local Board President Recognized with National Award

Joni Earl Receives 2011 Promise of One Award

January 19, 2012

SEATTLE  – The Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is proud to announce that Joni Earl, President of the Komen Puget Sound Board of Directors, has received the 2011 Susan G. Komen Promise of One Award. The national office of Susan G. Komen for the Cure created the Promise of One award to recognize local volunteers who demonstrate the power of one person to further the Komen mission of ending breast cancer forever.

Despite her busy schedule as CEO of Sound Transit, Joni generously donates her time and talent as President of the Board. Her six year commitment to serve the breast cancer community has made a significant difference in Komen Puget Sound’s ability to support the needs of local women facing breast cancer and fund medical research for a cure.

Joni's extraordinary commitment to the mission was demonstrated when she participated in the 2011 Susan G. Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure® despite having just undergone open heart surgery. Not only did Joni complete the 5K race course, she raised nearly $10,000 to support breast cancer screening and treatment for low income and underserved women in the Puget Sound area.

“Just as it takes one tree to start a forest, it takes the hope of just one person to raise the spirits of all of us. For Komen Puget Sound, Joni has been that person,” says Cheryl Shaw, Komen Puget Sound Executive Director. “This is why the Promise of One is such an appropriate award for Joni. Everyone who knows her is inspired and energized by her spirit. She has been a model leader for the Komen cause, and we are grateful for and better because of her service.”
