For Immediate Release – June 10, 2010
More than 13,000 breast cancer survivors, activists and supporters descended on the Seattle Center Sunday, June 6 to raise $1.5 million for Susan G. Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure®. The 17th annual event exceeded organizer expectations in the worst economy since the Depression.
“We’re thrilled the community is so passionate about fighting to find a cure for breast cancer,” said Cheryl Shaw, executive director of Komen Puget Sound. “Washington has one of the highest incidence of breast cancer in the country. The money raised will save lives throughout Puget Sound.”
Seventy-five percent of the money raised will go for breast cancer screening, breast health education and support services for women throughout the Puget Sound area. The other twenty-five percent will go to a national pool for breast cancer research. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® will spend $1 billion on research over the next decade. It is the largest privately financed breast cancer research in the world.
