The Puget Sound Affiliate of Susan G. Komen hosted the 10th annual Power of a Promise® luncheon at The Seattle Sheraton on Oct. 24, 2012 with more than 450 in attendance who together raised $218,000 to further the Komen vision of a world without breast cancer. The event was emceed by King5’s Jean Enersen and featured special guest, Susan Ford Bales, daughter of the late President and Betty Ford and breast cancer advocate. Susan spoke of the fear she felt learning about her mother’s diagnosis in 1974 and her admiration for her mother’s courage to disclose her breast cancer publically at a time when nobody dared to say the word “breast” in polite conversation. Together Betty and Susan partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fuel a national discussion about breast cancer, taking us from a past when we knew so little about the disease to today when advancements in screening and treatment have increased breast cancer survival by 33 percent.
