Join Us to Reduce the Breast Cancer Mortality Rate Among African American Women

·         One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

·         Washington state has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the nation.

·         African American women have the highest breast cancer mortality rate among all women.

The promise of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures.  We have joined the Puget Sound Affiliate because of our deep concern about the morality rate among African American women by sending this letter to a distinguished group of African American women to ask for your support.  Your leadership is important and your participation in this program will make a significant difference in our ability to spread the word and save lives of African American women living in our community.

Breast cancer is disproportionately affecting African American women in our community.  While breast cancer  continues to impact people from all backgrounds, there are significant differences within the mortality rates among racial groups.  

To stop this alarming trend, we are requesting you to accept the role as a 2010 Worship in Pink Campaign Ambassador.  During the campaign you will join African American women living in King and Pierce County to support local outreach that will help spread the word that women in our community are valued and cared for.

As a Worship in Pink Ambassador, you will help women overcome barriers to breast health resources and mammography screening by promoting the importance of early detection, encouraging faith based organizations to talk about the importance breast cancer screening and gathering together this fall to engage the media and the broader community about our concern and commitment to end breast cancer forever.

2010 Worship in Pink Ambassadors will:

•      Attend the 2010 Worship in Pink Campaign launch reception at the Northwest African American Museum 
         Wednesday, October 27 with special guest Alexine Clement Jackson, Susan G. Komen for the Cure 
         National Board President, Spellman Alumnae and Past Board President of the National YWCA with other 
         Ambassadors to demonstrate our commitment in numbers.

•      Allow the Komen Puget Sound Affiliate to use your name in campaign materials.

•      Help identify and engage faith based organizations and other groups to participate in the 
         2010 Worship in Pink weekend of October 29-31.

•      Help spread the word among your colleagues, family and friends about the campaign and how they 
         can actively participate by sending our informational e-mail on the website to twenty or more 
         African American women in King or Pierce County.

Please join this powerful movement to motivate and empower the community, mobilize our sisters and spread the word of life-saving early detection!
