2011 Grant Recipients

Komen Puget Sound awards $2M to local organizations and $815,000 to global research in 2011
Our emphasis is on funding culturally appropriate programs that close the gap in breast cancer disparities for underserved individuals living in our 16-county service area. We will provide vital health and breast cancer services to over 33,000 individuals this year.

EARLY DETECTION/EDUCATION_________________________________________________________

Funds culturally competent delivery of screening and diagnostic mammography services, outreach programs that facilitate access to breast cancer screening, and education focused on the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection.

Washington State Department of Health - $1,060,000
Komen Breast Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Program
Increase screening capacity for the Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program for uninsured or underinsured women, ages 40 to 64 with incomes at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level.

Franciscan Foundation - $123,870
Breast Cancer Navigator Program
Improve education and access to screening, diagnosis and treatment for Asian, Pacific Islander, African-American, Latina, Native American and sexual minority women in Tacoma/Pierce County.

International Community Health Services - $90,870
Breast Health Outreach, Prevention and Education Program
Provide breast health outreach, education and screening to low-income, limited English-speaking Chinese, Filipina, Korean, Mien, Samoan and other Pacific Islander and Vietnamese women in Seattle/King County.

Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest - $52,500
Honoring Women’s Health Project
Increase outreach, education and access to screening for American Indian, Latina, sexual minority women and women living in rural areas of Clallam County.

Sea Mar Community Health Centers - $34,800
Every Woman, Every Year
Provide breast health education and outreach to rural women over age 40 living in Aberdeen/Grays Harbor County.

Seattle Indian Health Board - $30,000
Urban Indian Breast Cancer Outreach Enhancement Project
Provide breast health outreach, education and screening to urban American Indian/Alaskan Native women in Seattle/King County.

Senior Services of Seattle-King County - $33,400
Breast Health Education and Screening Project
Provide community outreach and education for senior African- American and women of color.

South Puget Intertribal Planning Agency - $83,000
Native Women’s Wellness Program
Provide breast health outreach, education, screening and support to women in rural tribal communities in southwest Washington who rarely or never have been screened for breast cancer.

YWCA of Seattle/King County and Snohomish County - $87,150
Opening Doors
Provide education and mobile screenings for medically underserved African-American, Latina, and sexual minority women and low-income Russian-speaking women, homeless women, and women in rural areas.

PATIENT NAVIGATION___________________________________________________________________

Funding provides one-on-one patient navigation that assists breast cancer patients in accessing and understanding the medical system, helping ensure they receive the best possible treatment.

Mason General Hospital - $58,300
Expanding Early Detection and Patient Navigation for Rural Mason County Women
Assist breast cancer patients during treatment and provide survivor support, awareness and screening for low-income, Hispanic and women living in remote rural areas of Mason County.

UW Medicine | School of Medicine - $32,900
Partnering with Patients to Improve Breast Cancer Care
Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Breast Health Cancer Program at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance provides patient navigation services to low-income breast cancer patients.

PATIENT ASSISTANCE AND TREATMENT SUPPORT___________________________________________

Funding for safety net programs for low-income breast cancer patients include financial assistance for rent/mortgage, prescriptions for medications not available through pharmaceutical assistance funds, transportation, utilities, food and nutritional supplements, medical supplies, COBRA insurance premiums, child care, personal hygiene, special clothing and dental care needed prior to chemotherapy. Treatment support services include culturally appropriate support groups, classes and resources relevant to breast cancer patients and survivors.

Cancer Lifeline - $313,160
Komen Patient Assistance Fund
Administer the fund to provide assistance and support for low-income patients while they are in treatment for breast cancer.
