Fundraising FAQ - Answers
- How are the fundraising proceeds used?
75 percent of the Race’s net income stays in Western Washington to fund local screening, treatment and education programs for the medically underserved. The remaining 25 percent supports the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program, which fund groundbreaking breast cancer research. ^top
- Is there a fundraising requirement?
It is not required. However, participant fundraising is critical to the success of the Race and the programs funded by Komen Puget Sound. Not only do your fundraising efforts make an impact, but you start earning great rewards once you’ve reached $250 in donations! - How do I submit donations I have collected?
Send donations, in the form of check or money order, along with a fundraising form (.pdf) to our office. ^top
- What is the deadline for sending in donations?
July 12, 2012 is the last day to turn in donations to qualify for fundraising prizes. See our Fundraising page for other deadlines. ^top
- How do I submit cash donations?
We do accept cash donations, but recommend you bring them with you on Race day. Please do not mail cash. ^top
- What kind of fundraising rewards can I earn?

- How are fundraising totals calculated?
For the purpose of top fundraiser prizes, a team’s fundraising total is the sum of all donations made to the team plus donations made to individual team members. Individual fundraising totals include donations made to the individual (not to a team). Note: matching gifts will not appear in the fundraising thermometers, but will count in prize level totals if received in our office by July 12, 2012. ^top
- Does my registration fee count as a donation?
No. Registration fees do not count as donations. ^top
- What is a matching gift and how do I apply for one?
A matching gift is when a person makes a donation to a nonprofit organization and their employer donates an equal or greater amount to the same group. A matching gift is a great way for a donor to increase their contribution to the breast cancer movement. See our Matching Gift page for more information. ^top
- Can volunteers fundraise?
Yes! Volunteers are encouraged to collect donations for the Komen Puget Sound Race. ^top
- If I don’t participate in the event, what happens to the money I have raised?
All donations to the Race are non-transferable and non-refundable. If you are unable to participate in the event, your donations will go directly to the cause as if you had participated. We trust your donors will appreciate supporting Susan G. Komen for the Cure regardless of your participation on Race day. ^top

Search our participant database by first or last name. ^top
- Why is the participant search not finding the person I'm looking for?
You must enter their name exactly the way it they entered it at registration. Try entering just the first few letters of the participant's name for more results. ^top
- How do I make a donation to a team?
If you don’t have a direct link to the team’s fundraising page, you can do a team name search. If you make a donation directly to a team, it will contribute to the fundraising goal of the entire team, not an individual team member. ^top
- Who should I make my check payable to?
Please make all checks payable to: “Susan G. Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure” or “Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure” ^top
- Where should I mail donation checks?
Donations made by check must be accompanied by a fundraising form (.pdf). Mail checks and completed forms to: Susan G. Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure 112 Fifth Ave N Seattle, WA 98109

- Are donations tax-deductible in the United States?
Yes, all monetary donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by United States law. Please contact a tax professional for specific advice. ^top
- Are registration fees tax-deductible?
No, registration fees are not tax-deductible. ^top
- Can the Race accept international donations?
Yes, we can accept international donations online, by credit card only. ^top
- For international donations made online with a credit card, is the amount entered in the donation form in U.S. dollars?
Yes. The online donation form is in U.S. dollars. ^top
- Do donations made to the Race qualify for tax deductions in other countries?
Please check with a tax professional for regulations and laws specific to your country. ^top
- Can a donor give stock as a donation?
Yes. The Komen Puget Sound Race accepts donations of stock. Please contact Gail Lapasin, Director of Development, at gail@pskomen.org or 206.633.0303 x108. ^top
- Do all donors receive a receipt?
Anyone who donates, regardless of the amount, will receive a receipt if they provide a valid email address. For those who donate online, a printable receipt is generated at the time. For mail-in donations that include a valid email address, a receipt will be emailed when the donation has been processed. Donations without valid email addresses will only be mailed a receipt if the amount is $250 or more. ^top
- Are cash donations accepted?
We do accept cash donations, but recommend participants submit them on Race day. Please do not mail cash. ^top
Matching Gifts FAQ - Answers
- What is a matching gift?
A matching gift is when a person makes a donation to a nonprofit organization and their employer donates an equal or greater amount to the same group. A matching gift is a great way for a donor to increase their contribution to the breast cancer movement. ^top
- How do I know if a company will make a matching gift for a donation?
The only way to know for sure is for the donor to ask their employer. Please review our list of companies who have matched gifts to Komen Puget Sound in the past. ^top
- How does a donor apply for a matching gift?
In general, companies process matching gifts either by paper or online. Donors will need to check with their employer to find out which process they use. Our Matching Gifts page provides general overview of the typical matching gifts processes. ^top
- The matching gift company has a list of nonprofit organizations to choose from; which name should I pick?
It is very important that the donor designate “Susan G. Komen PUGET SOUND Race for the Cure” as the recipient of the matching gift (with the recipient address of 112 Fifth Ave N, Seattle WA 98109 and Tax ID 91-1624040), not “Susan G. Komen for the Cure®” or “Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure®” or any Susan G. Komen event or affiliate other than the Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure. ^top
- Where should I mail the matching gift form?

- Can the donor mail the matching gift form?
We recommend participants mail matching gift forms so they can record the mailing date and ensure it is mailed to the correct address. Donors are responsible for completing the matching gift process if their company uses an online system. ^top
- How long does it take for the Race to process a matching gift form and mail it back to the matching gift company?
Depending on the employer’s processing time, it can take up to 3 months for the Race to receive and process matching gifts ^top
- How long does take for the matching gift company to cut a check for the matching gift?
Company programs vary - please contact them directly to find out how often matching gift checks are cut and mailed. ^top
- What happens if a matching gift is not approved by a matching gift company?
If a matching gift company does not approve a matching gift, the company will contact either the donor or the Race. If the Race is contacted, we share the information with the participant. ^top
- Do matching gifts count toward participant fundraising totals?
Yes. Matching gifts will not appear in the fundraising thermometers, but will count in prize level totals if received in our office by July 12, 2012. ^top
