Featured Story of the Week

We each have our own reasons for being a part of the Race, and for choosing which part of the Race we will be.  Why are YOU the Cure?

I AM the Cure for my friend Jackie and her daughter Sue; and for my daughter, Kate.  I AM the Cure for my sister-in-law, who is a survivor.  I AM the Cure in memory of my mother-in-law who was ashamed even to talk about having breast cancer.  We cannot be silent about it.  We cannot just wish it away.  We have to be the Cure.  I AM the Cure.”

Julie O’Leary joined the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Race Volunteers in 2009 because her best friend’s mom is a survivor.  Julie saw that if breast cancer could hit Jackie, then it could hit her daughter Sue, too, and she does not want to see either of them suffer further from this disease.

Julie realized it could hit her own daughter, Katie, as well.  Katie volunteered, too, and both of them found that being a part of the Race – being the Cure – is something profoundly moving and enabling.  They determined that day that the Race for the Cure will be a family tradition.

Julie chose to be a Race Volunteer because that gave her an opportunity to spend the day with Jackie and Sue, and help Survivors celebrate.  The O’Learys will be back every year!
